Collaborative ArtworkCollaborations with other artists is always fun and instructive, particularly if they work in media other than your own. I have been fortunate to have recently worked with two such artists: Julie Lence-Panto, a butterfly artist; and Michele Foster, a jewelry design artist. With Julie, we have begun to experiment with adding the amazing color and texture of butterflies from around the world to my wood artwork. Our first collaboration is "Beautiful Mind", a piece that included carving a female bust, something that I enjoyed immensely and plan to continue in future artwork (see "Earth Mother" in Sculptural Artwork). I have also worked with Michele Foster, a very talented jewelry designer who incorporates the natural beauty of shell, cabochons and drusies to produce very beautiful pendants & pins with a unique organic flair. In this collaboration, I was interested in incorporating her jewelry, featuring the hard, bright colors of polished stones, shell, crystals and silver, into sculptures featuring the softer, warmer textures and colors of wood. I designed each sculpture around one jewelry piece, and called this series "Art in Art" signifying her art within my art. Each jewelry piece is easily removable from the wood sculpture, so that it can be worn and then replaced as desired. Thus, when not worn, the jewelry becomes part of a sculpture to be enjoyed, rather than being hidden away in a jewelry box. |
